With both white and dark chocolate, these easy Valentine’s Day hot chocolate bombs are a perfect way to celebrate! Using a silicone sphere mold and chocolate chips, this hot chocolate recipe could not be more simple!
Raise your hand if you want to be the “cool mom” that makes hot chocolate bombs, but you also don’t have ridiculous amounts of time or fancy ingredients?
That was my struggle for sure. I have three kids three and under, and while I know my oldest would love a fancy hot chocolate bomb, I don’t have the time or energy to make something so articulate.
That’s why after a lot of reading and research, I developed these easy hot chocolate bombs! They’re so easy, my 3 year old was able to help!
I made these Valentine’s Day hot chocolate bombs to kick off the love day spirit. We’re all a little sad that Christmas and New Year’s is over, so we’ve been doing lots of Valentine’s Day activities to help with the winter blues.
Last year we made Valentine’s Day cookies, but this year we stepped it up a notch! These Valentine’s Day hot chocolate bombs were the perfect after dinner treat!

What makes these hot chocolate bombs easier than others?
I affectionately refer to this method as the “lazy mom’s way of making hot chocolate bombs.” Though if you’re taking the time to make hot chocolate bombs, can you really be lazy?! But as a busy mom, I (try to) keep it simple.
There are a few things that make these hot chocolate bombs easier than some of the other recipes on the internet. They are:
- Using silicone molds. The spheres will pop right out when hardened! My 3 year old was able to easily remove the sphere without breaking it.
- Using chocolate chips. Many recipes call for a bar chocolate chopped finely. I wanted to make this as easy as possible. Remember, I’m a busy mom of three! I’m not looking to sell these, I just want to bring a little extra joy to my kids.
- The sealing method. I sealed my treats by putting a nonstick pan over heat on the lowest setting. Take the top sphere and place it on the sauce pan for a few seconds, until it’s just starting to melt. While it’s still soft, place it over the bottom “stuffed” sphere and gently press together. If there are still gaps in the seal, you can pipe a little melted chocolate to fill them, but I didn’t find that to be necessary.
- Tempering the chocolate in the microwave. Does the word tempering scare you? It really shouldn’t! Tempering just means you’re getting the chocolate to the right temperature. If you have a kitchen thermometer, you can use it. Since these use white chocolate, you’ll want to use an instant read thermometer and stop melting them when they reach 84-86 degrees Fahrenheit.
Don’t have a kitchen thermometer? No problem. Melt the chocolate in 15 second intervals. You will stop microwaving the chocolate once it is partially melted but still lumpy. When the chocolate begins melting, pull it from the microwave and continue stirring it until all of the chocolate chips are melted. - Using a spoon instead of a brush. I’m going to be honest, I hate cleaning out a brush. I tried making these using a spoon to put the chocolate into the molds, and it worked great! The biggest difference I noticed is that the chocolate shell was a bit thicker, so the hot chocolate was very sweet. This worked to my advantage, though, as one hot chocolate bomb can be happily shared between two kids.
What You Need
- A silicone sphere mold. You’ll want one that’s large enough to hold the filling, but small enough to fit in a mug. I found this one to be the perfect size.
- Chocolate chips. I used white chocolate chips, but you could use any kind you have.
- Hot chocolate. I used dark chocolate because it felt most “Valentine’s Day” to me. You can use whatever you like! Each bomb uses 1 tablespoon.
- Other fillings. See the section below on possible filling ideas.
- Optional: an instant read kitchen thermometer, piping bags, and a paint brush.
How to Decorate The Hot Chocolate Bombs
To decorate the tops of the bombs, I took a few tablespoons of white chocolate and melted them in the microwave. I put one drop of food coloring in to make it pink, and poured the chocolate into a sandwich bag. I then cut the corner off of the bag and drizzled the pink chocolate over the top. My daughter then took a pinch of sprinkles and dropped them on top when the chocolate was still wet.
If you have piping bags lying around, you can use a piping bag instead of a sandwich bag. Again, I tried to make this as simple as possible, so I used a sandwich bag!
You could also dip a fork or spoon into the chocolate and drizzle that way.
Quick Tips and Tricks For Making The Perfect Hot Chocolate Bomb
- Make sure to coat the rim of the chocolate sphere well. On your second coat of chocolate, really focus on getting a thick layer around the rim to prevent breakage.
- Wipe your mold clean before pouring chocolate. Any residue in the rim can affect the shine and glossiness of the chocolate.
- Don’t handle the bomb too much. Minimize the amount of time you are touching the chocolate so you don’t leave fingerprints or melt the chocolate. Alternatively, some people recommend touching them only with gloves.
- Stop melting the chocolate when it is still lumpy and partially melted. In other words, don’t overheat the chocolate! Once it is partially melted, remove it from the microwave and stir it until smooth.
- You can use candy melts, but it’s not the same. While candy melts may seem like the perfect choice, you’ll be compromising both flavor and shine.
- After popping the chocolate out of the shell, place them into a muffin tin. This will prevent them from rolling around as you try to fill them, and will also minimize handling.

Valentine's Day Hot Chocolate Bombs
These Valentine's Day hot chocolate bombs use white chocolate shells with dark chocolate cocoa for a delicious and sweet dessert! This is the easiest way to make hot chocolate bombs, using a silicone sphere mold and no fancy ingredients or tools needed.
Ingredients
- 2 cups white chocolate chips, divided
- 4 tbsp. dark chocolate hot cocoa mix
- 4 tbsp. mini marshmallows
- Sprinkles (optional)
- Red or pink food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Place 1 3/4 cup of white chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl. Place in microwave for 15 seconds, stir. Continue melting in 15 second intervals until chocolate is starting to melt but still lumpy.
- When white chocolate is partially melted, remove from microwave and continue stirring until smooth.
- Wipe out the inside of your silicone sphere mold. Any residue can cause blemishes on your hot chocolate bombs.
- Using either a small spoon or brush, coat the inside of each sphere on your mold. Make sure there is enough chocolate on the rims of the mold.
- Clean the outer edge of the mold with a paper towel if any chocolate dripped outside of the sphere.
- Place molds in refrigerator for five minutes.
- Once hardened, paint a second coat of chocolate in the sphere mold. Make sure there is enough chocolate around the rim of the mold, so that it does not break when you take the mold out.
- Place molds back in the refrigerator for five minutes.
- Once hardened, remove chocolate from molds.
- Place 1 tablespoon of hot chocolate, 1 tablespoon of marshmallows, and a pinch of sprinkles into four of the molds. This will be the bottom of your hot chocolate bombs.
- Heat a small non-stick pan over very low heat. Take the top of the hot chocolate bombs and carefully heat the rim of the chocolate sphere on the pan. Once it is slightly melted, gently press it over a filled sphere.
- Melt the remaining chocolate chips in the microwave, 15 seconds at a time as done in steps 1-2. Place 1 drop of food coloring into the chocolate and stir.
- Drizzle the hot chocolate bombs with colored chocolate and top with sprinkles or marshmallows.
To Serve:
Place hot chocolate bombs into a mug. Pour steaming 8-12 ounces of hot milk or water over the bomb and watch them burst! Stir and enjoy!
