Dark chocolate and peppermint…does anything say Christmas more than that dynamic duo?!
This recipe is so simple and easy to make. Heck, even college students could make this in a dorm room with a microwave. Its an easy Christmas candy recipe for kids and parents to make together and it looks elegant and festive on a Christmas cookie tray.
This is one of my three favorite Christmas candies, next to chocolate butterscotch peanut clusters and saltine cracker toffee. I love how simple it is to throw together while a batch of cookies is baking in the oven.
Another big perk of this recipe is that it’s a gluten free Christmas candy. That means when I have gluten-free friends coming over, I can make them a separate tray of Christmas candy so they can join in on the festive desserts.
Helpful tips
- Make sure you line a rimmed baking sheet before you pour the chocolate on. I recommend a thick, heavy duty aluminum foil.
- Don’t burn the chocolate. You can either use a double boiler to melt the chocolate, or my personal favorite, the microwave. If microwaving the chocolate, melt it in 30 second increments and stir between. When using a double boiler, keep stirring and moving the chocolate. This is the key to ensuring the chocolate doesn’t burn. You can also use a thermometer to make sure the chocolate is between 115-118 degrees.
Turn off the heat when the chocolate is mostly melted but still a little lumpy. Continue stirring the chocolate to melt the lumps. - Prep your chopped peppermint sticks or candy canes first. That way they’re ready to be sprinkled on the bark before it hardens.
- You can freeze your bark before chopping it to make cutting easier. The chocolate needs to be pretty hard to cut it apart, freezing helps make nice little shards of chocolate peppermint bark.
- Wrap up in cellophane bags when putting on a cookie tray. This prevents all of your cookies from tasting like peppermint!

Dark Chocolate Peppermint Bark
This easy peppermint bark is a great addition to any cookie tray or Holiday gift basket. It requires only a few ingredients and is very fast to put together!
Ingredients
- 2 cups dark chocolate chips
- 2.5 cups white chocolate chips
- 1 tsp peppermint extract
- about 3-4 crushed candy canes to top (or more to your preference)
Instructions
Line a rimmed cookie sheet with heavy duty aluminum foil.
Melt dark chocolate chips in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in-between, until chocolate is smooth. Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate over a double boiler. Add peppermint extract to melted chocolate and stir. Pour over the foil and spread to each corner. Allow to cool and harden.
Melt white chocolate in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in-between, until chocolate is smooth. Pour over cooled and hardened dark chocolate and spread to cover.
Top with crushed candy canes while chocolate is still melted and allow to harden. Break apart by hand or with a knife.
Notes
This recipe makes 8-12 servings, depending on how large you cut the bark.
