I am an absolute stickler for car seat safety. In the event of an emergency situation, I want them to be as safe as they possibly can be!

When my oldest was born, I saw a post from a first responder on Facebook telling parents they should put information on their child’s car seat in case of an accident. That way first responders, such as EMTs, firefighters, and police officers know the child’s name, age, and any medical conditions or allergies if they need to be treated.

I have always placed a car seat identification tag on my little one’s car seat for that reason. It’s just one extra thing that helps keep them safe in the car!

It is an extremely simple and easy thing to do that could be extremely helpful in an emergency situation. There is no reason not to put an ID tag on your car seat!

Think about it – if you’re in a car crash and unable to respond…how would anyone know that your child is nonverbal? Or that they are allergic to ibuprofen and should not be given that as treatment? It will be a lot less frightening to your child if the people that arrive on scene know your child’s name and can contact family as well.

Safety is important! Keep a list of emergency contacts (free printable contact sheet) on your refrigerator.

I made these car seat identification tags for my kids, and I wanted to share them with my readers! They are pretty large so that they are easy to spot and read.

On my baby’s bucket seat, I placed it towards the bottom.

With the larger car seats, I placed them along the side, going up the back. With all three car seats I made sure to have the ID tag facing towards the door of the car. You could also print an extra and place them on both sides of the car seat.

If you have multiple riders for each car seat, you may want to print several and place a photo of the child next to their ID tag. Do whatever you are comfortable with!

If your child has medical issues that would concern you during a crash, you may also want to add one of these seat belt covers. They open up to that can store more information about your child’s needs.

How to attach to the car seat

I used clear packing tape to attach the ID tag to the car seat.

You could also use a clear paper protector to place the sheet inside. This would be ideal if you had to change out the ID tag frequently. Note: the tags are not fitted to the size of the paper protector. You may have to fold the protector to be the right size.
